The Christian Civic League of Maine's Mike Hein calls Pam's House Blend:
"a leading source of radical homosexual propaganda, anti-Christian bigotry, and radical transgender advocacy."

He is "praying that Pam Spaulding will "turn away from her wicked and sinful promotion of homosexual behavior." (CCLM's web site, 10/15/07)

Ex-gay "Christian" activist James Hartline on Pam:
"I have been mocked over and over again by ungodly and unprincipled anti-christian lesbians."
(from "Six Years In Sodom: From The Journal Of James Hartline," 9/4/2006, written from the "homosexual stronghold" of Hillcrest in San Diego).

"Pam is a 'twisted lesbian sister' and an 'embittered lesbian' of the 'self-imposed gutteral experiences of the gay ghetto.'" -- 9/5/2008

Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth Against Homosexuality heartily endorses the Blend, calling Pam:

A "vicious anti-Christian lesbian activist."
(Concerned Women for America's radio show [9:15], 1/25/07)

"A nutty lesbian blogger."
(MassResistance radio show [16:25], 2/3/07)

Pam's House Blend always seems to find these sick f*cks. The area of the country she is in? The home state of her wife? I know, they are everywhere. Pam just does such a great job of bringing them out into the light.

Voting on Election Day

Where do I go to vote?

Every town and city has its own places where people vote. You can call your town office or city hall to find out where you vote, or use the online Voter Information Lookup service.

Voting places open between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., depending on the size of the town. Local officials can give you the exact opening time for your community. All polling places close at 8:00 p.m. on Election Day.

Can I have help voting?

Yes. If you need help reading or marking the ballot, you may ask a relative or friend for assistance. The helper does not have to be a voter or old enough to vote. An election official can also help you read or mark a ballot. However, your employer or union official cannot help you vote.

How do I locate and contact my municipal clerk?

You can find contact information for your town office or city hall on Maine.gov at http://www.maine.gov/local/.

You may also contact:
Office of the Secretary of State
Division of Elections
101 State House Station
Augusta, ME 04333-0101

Registering to Vote

Who can register and vote in Maine?

To register, you must be a United States citizen, at least 17 years of age, and live in Maine.

To vote in the November 3, 2009 General Election, you must be registered in the community where you reside, and be at least 18 years of age.

Where do I go to register?

You can register to vote at your town office or city hall, through any Motor Vehicle branch office, in most state & federal social service agencies, or at voter registration drives. Completed voter registration cards may be hand delivered or mailed to your town office or city hall, or sent to the Secretary of State's Office in Augusta.

Is there a deadline for registering?

No. It's never too late to register to vote in Maine. You can register to vote until, and including, Election Day. There is no cut-off date for registering to vote in person at your town office or city hall.

More photos and the story of these moose, LL Bean's latest exhibit, below the fold.

Louise :: Election Day 2009- Open Thread

These moose were found dead in New Sweden ME, which is way up near Houlton/Canadian border. I cannot imagine the work that was required to build this exhibit- even with the photos and narrative explaining how this was done, it's still an incredibly daunting project with beautiful results.
==============================================
Charlie and I heard about this amazing bit of taxidermy artistry awhile ago and decided that the image of 2 huge Maine bull moose, locked to the death, was a very strong image.

But the photos cannot do justice to the sheer SIZE of one of these creatures, let alone both together. This is a HUGE display!
=================================================
There was also this sign that Charlie saw and I missed:

If you compare the 2 sides of today's equality battle to this, the sign makes alot of sense!

Ever since the "Maine Won't Discriminate" law was passed in November 2005, there has been pushes to repeal it that failed to garner support. And frankly, SFMM has been, in many of their ads run during their campaign, shown that what they are fighting is not marriage per se, but acceptance of LGBTQ in our Maine communities.

==================================================

Attacking schools was especially nasty- what kind of message are they sending LGBTQ kids?

Yet they went there, time and again, desperate to find a way, ANY WAY, to win.

So- now here we are- Election Day. And hopefully in a matter of hours, we will know who won and not be deadlocked like these 2 moose!

Fighting
Fighting serves no one well. It diminishes those who participate, in this case leading to death. Can we learn something from this, do you suppose?

I somewhat disagree....
Sometimes fighting is justified. When your rights are being taken away. When your loved ones are theatened. When strangers are threatened by others.

Now, fighting like this - all things being equal, yeah, 2 moose of equal size, weight, experience, age, etc. will both be exhausted no matter who wins, and be vulnerable to predation and disease. IT could be a Pyrric victory, as often happens in nature.

But when you're talking about rights and equality? Smart fighting is absolutely needed.

GO MAINE.

[ Parent ]
Not quite sure where you're going with this
We're not fighting for money, for power, for stature. Unlike the wealthy organized hate cults who continue to attack our right to exist, we're not fighting to diminish others.

We're fighting for our lives and the lives of our families. We're fighting for future generations, for those minorities who need the Constitution to protect them, as well. Fighting for my life, for the lives of those I love, for the ideal of equal treatment for all - it reinforces that I am human, that I have just as much a right to breathe the air and be protected under the mantle of a just and fair law.

It doesn't diminish me. It lifts me up in the face of those who would use their own ignorance, their own bigotry, their love of violence and hate, to persecute and hurt others for no reason other than that they feel they can. It says, "I am here, and I too am worthy of the same things as you."

Tomorrow, AFTER WE WIN... You, Louise, are under strict orders to SLEEP IN!!

You are loved!

I must be!
Just getting settled into my room at Holiday Inn; saw Jesse C speaking w/press (WMTW) in the lobby, so knew I was at the right place! ;)

And because of Charlie's Priority Club status, I got a lil swag bag of goodies:  water, cookies, map of Portland, informational handout, etc- BUT NO CHEETOS!!!

Fortunately, I anticipated this oversight and brought my own... here they are w/my fave South Park "Respect My Authority!" jams...

BTW, Election Day Cheetos are delicious!!! ;)

No, it's another Sean Chapin video...
I always appreciate his efforts online (especially on YouTube!), but I must admit his videos occasionally raise my eyebrows. This is one of those eyebrow raising videos when I ask myself, "HUH??!!" Well, I'll still give him an "A" for effort and hope the campaign has everything in place today.

If you're in NC & voting today
specifically in Chapel Hill, please remember to vote Mark Kleinschmidt & tell your friends to do the same.  If he wins it'll be the largest city in NC to of ever had an openly gay mayor.

On MSNBC they reported record number of absentee ballots are already in
I'm hoping that bodes well for all the work the No on 1 team have already achieved.

Hoping to have noon update
With WMTW already talking w/Jesse downstairs, my guess it that both noon and 6pm news are gonna be "must see".

All polls statewide close at 8pm and absentees such as mine are some of the last popped into the counting machine...

"It goes on one at a time, it starts when you care to act, it starts when you do it again after they said no, it starts when you say We and know who you mean, and each day you mean one more."

[ Parent ]
Sec of State Matt Dunlap
had predicted 35% turnout; he was just on WCSH6 (NBC Portland) and raised that to 50%!

Lots of high turnouts... this is GOOD.

"It goes on one at a time, it starts when you care to act, it starts when you do it again after they said no, it starts when you say We and know who you mean, and each day you mean one more."

[ Parent ]
I guess the higher the turnout
the better the news is for us. I do believe more people's hearts and minds are in our corner, I just worry they are not as motivated to support us, as people are to oppose us.

[ Parent ]
I wonder, is there any reason to believe
absentee ballots would go in our favor? I suppose it might be possible younger people might be more inclined to vote absentee, because they're busier, and because older people may be more likely to distrust anything but the tried and true, going to the polls method.

[ Parent ]
Don't forget the college kids on campus...
Campus activism sometimes goes after kids living outside of their home jurisdiction, since most areas don't consider a dorm to be a permanent address. There was that kind of absentee ballot campaign last year for the Presidential election, and I'm guessing that's another factor in a high absentee ballot count.

[ Parent ]
yeah, I was thinking about that
Many college kids vote absentee. They're better disposed to vote in our favor, in general. And I almost wonder if the ones who support us, are MORE motivated than the young people who oppose us. As the numbers of people supporting us strength, the zeal with which we're opposed declines.

[ Parent ]
In general (but not 100% of the time)
higher participation rates mean more liberal causes win. Many votes to ban marriage equality have featured participation by very small slivers of the electorate.

Typically conservatives seek to suppress turnout to win; liberal causes and candidates tend to benefit from the opposite, so I am hopeful.

[ Parent ]
We need to brace ourselves--for a win and its aftermath
If the bigots lose this vote, that won't be the end of it--not by a long shot.  They'll go to court time and time again, on any trumped-up pretext they can think of, attempting to get the vote results overturned.  Then they'll appeal and appeal again.  Then they'll try again with another damn people's veto.  Then they'll get the pope to place Maine under interdict.  They won't stop, not tonight, not ever.

Do any states? I thought MA did, but maybe not?

[ Parent ]
MA
I think that MA got rid of their residency requirement.  I don't know why I'm not 100% sure - I just spent four years of my life at college in MA!  But I'm 99% sure that it was recently repealed; the law that said you had to live there a certain amount of time prior was based on an early 1900s law against interracial marriage.

Recognizing the invariable tactics of the bigots
is not doom and gloom.  It is realism.  In every single jurisdiction where they've lost a pro-LGBT vote, they have tried every tactic imaginable to try and reverse the outcome.  Why expect it to be any different here?  Do you really think Maggie will be a gracious loser?  As a wise man observed, burying your head in the sand only makes you an easier target.

"Then they'll get the pope to place Maine under interdict."
I have no doubt about the rest, but if Paparazzi does this, there will be backlash - everyone moderate and liberal parishioner and clergy who held on through the sex-abuse scandels will be forced to do more than smile, nod, and do what they need to anyway (what a majority of US Catholics already do). They will walk. And with the Christmas donation season coming (and the end of year accounting most parishes do for their respective dioceses), the US church can't afford to lose any more funds.

It's an empty threat, but as a former Catholic, I understand their anxiety. And I just have to say, "Can I interest you in some coffee cake down at the UCC?"

It's being too "literal" when it's really been threatened?
And individual priests and bishops have taken it upon themselves to deny communion to well-known politicians based on their voting record?

And individual church volunteers have been removed from their volunteer work because they write a letter to the editor in support of equality?

Didn't think that was taking things to literally.

And if I bore you, feel free to ignore me, and I'll do the same.

Maine election officials are reporting a steady - but not heavy
Maine reporting steady, not heavy voting
Submitted by The Associated Press on Tue, 11/03/2009 - 09:26
in Central Maine Newspapers Portland Press Herald
PORTLAND - turnout at the polls as residents have the final say on gay marriage.

Tom Denenberg of Portland says he voted in favor of gay marriage because it's a "basic issue of fairness." But Chuck Schott, also of Portland, said Maine will "live in infamy" if Mainers vote in favor of gay marriage because no other states' residents have done so.

While gay marriage is Tuesday's top item, Maine residents also are voting on two tax-related referendums and proposals calling for the repeal of the state's school district consolidation law and an expansion of the state's medical marijuana law.

Many people already voted. Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap says more than 100,000 absentee ballots have been returned.   http://updates.pressherald.mai...

I was sure to encourage them all to get out to vote bright and early on Wednesday.

I actually think one or two bought it.

Awww, come on.
Moral high ground.  Please.  I dwell on it and take it personally every time I encounter an elderly bigot, too, but people on either side of the issue deserve better than to be fooled out of their vote.

See my comment above about literal-mindedness.

[ Parent ]
So voter fraud is really interesting?
Yes, it's a joke. Unfortunately, there are tons of people who outright LIE about what a law or policy will or won't do.

see "death panels"
see "teaching sex-ed to kindergarteners"
see "welfare queens"
see "public option = communism!"
and so on and so on.

So forgive some of us for being boring by questioning a comment's literalness. Because people are literally lying about real laws and voting options. Because voter fraud still exists, on small and grand scales (see "Ohio 2004").

My great-grandmother marched for the right to vote. She'd slap me silly if I deliberately lied to make others change their vote or fail to vote entirely. If my grandmother on the other side of the family had stayed in Virginia, she likely wouldn't have been able to safely vote at all until she was in her 40s (the 1960s). I've been snubbed because of my appearance and told inappropriate things outside of polling stations in an attempt to influence a vote.

If people are being too literal about something, maybe it's because there's too much truth in the idea to risk not being taken seriously.

I'm really, really hoping for wins here, particularly as it will help to counteract the inevitible predictions of death for the Obama administration's agenda when the GOP wins the VA races (aside, could the Democrats have picked a less charismatic candidate than Deeds?)

Of the primary candidates, no
could the Democrats have picked a less charismatic candidate than Deeds

Of the primary candidates, no.

I do not understand why primary voters opted for the guy. He is my state Senator, and, having lobbied him in person several times, I can attest that his single most obvious talent is for dithering and circumlocution.

He’s also not the greatest friend to gay folks, having come down on the bigot side on several specific issues. (Apologists point to his rural district to explain this; personally, I don’t care much about the reason.) Put another way, LGBT Virginians are being given the usual choice between bad and worse.

I am counting the days until I can leave this state for good.
