Michael Savage calls transgender murder victim a 'psychopath' and a 'freak'

Does Michael Savage even have a shread of humanity?

Doesn't her realize that the crime victim has a family out there?

Seriously, I want to know who Savage's radio sponsors are. I'm all for free speech, but I don't want to in any way subsidize Savage's "brands" of free speech.

Probably the bigger companies would say that they buy in bulk blah blah blah, but as we saw with Coulter, that's not an acceptable excuse -- they could keep their ads away from Savage or Savage-enablers (e.g., KCMO FM radio station) if they chose to.  They are accountable to know where their ads are showing up.  And Savage is the most truly anti-social person I've ever heard on the radio (and that's saying a lot).

I got to listen to this horrible, deranged creature over the Christmas period I spent with my friends and family in Michigan (I'm Irish, myself). There is absolutely no way that this man would be allowed on the radio in Europe. There is no difference at all between what Savage (whose real name is Wiener- I kid you not) says and what radical Muslim clerics have preached in London (and been locked up and deported for) nor what neo-Nazis are banned from saying in Germany, nor any person who threatens death to US national representatives, including the president. This is more than 'hate-speak'; this is incitement to murder. This man is a killer. People listen to him and then kill gay people. Freedom of speech does not, of should not, cover spreading this kind of evil across an entire nation.

In Savage's case, the overused appellation 'Nazi' is ENTIRELY appropriate; the man is a REAL neo-fascist thug. A bona-fide brownshirt.

Savage, like Coulter,

absolutely makes a contribution to real harm being caused to real people.  As with Coulter, his hyper-raging, narcissistic, grandiose, authoritarian act-outs are how he makes money (for himself, for radio stations, for advertisers).  And as with Coulter, it's simply time for this stuff to be put out of business.  It's not OK for a civilized society.  I have no problem with people expressing conservative or even ultraconservative views, but Savage's level of demeanment is not OK, and never has been.

I'm hoping that the Coulter tipping point will soon tip Savage.  It's way overdue.

Some months back, I heard myself Savage refer to "homosexuals" as "filthy vermin."  The man has a long and damning record of verbal violence.  Like Coulter, he can't get away with (while he might try) saying, "That's not what I meant."

but, we are better than Great Britian and Germany when it comes to tolerating dissent.  I remember being in Berlin seeing Neo-Nazi's marching to protest that it would soon be a crime for them to meet, run for office, or march.  Sometimes we forget how radical the first amendment is.

I am Whit, also in Europe.... I LOVE the blend and have lurked for far too long.  No way I can hold my own against Kevin, Callie and the others.  You guys are the BEST and the high point of my day.

I drank the cool aid for TOO long.  Europe is SO refreshing in so many ways.  I agree that the first amendment is all about freedom of speech, but I kind of think maybe some speech should not be so free.  In Europe the individiual is empowered as long as others are not hurt.  I always felt like it was that way in the states until I came here.  Here there is true freedom. 

I hail from TX and the two societies are night and day.  3oz of pot?  no prob.  Prostitution, gay marriage...no problem.  Society does not end with personal freedoms, it is better.  Yes there may be some squelching of some extreme groups, and I never thought I would believe it, but maybe some need squelching.  Maybe not squelched, but Savage should have no place among civilized people.

I dunno.  It is just extremely affirming to live in a tolerant society.  If only my employer was as tolerant.

Sorry, but you are completely wrong.

Free speech in the US has been suppressed many times.  I won't go into the details, but do a little investigation into the opinions in the Schenck and Frohwerk cases From the US Supreme Court shortly after WWI (I, not II). 

And one of the dissenting opinions in the "heckler's veto" case Terminiello vs. City of Chicago http://caselaw.lp.fi... was one of the American representatives during the Nuremberg trials.  Truly amazing turnabout.

Free speech in the USofA isn't really as free as some people might like to believe.

Someone did a massive study of this issue recently (I can't recall the author, sorry), and every time our country has been at war or felt threatened, civil rights have been under siege--especially free speech, going back to the founding years of our country.  How about those Alien and Sedition Acts?  We have an ignoble tradition in this regard.

You can't compare Germany to us

Okay, the German ban on Neo-Nazi expression in various forms is totally inapplicable to American society.  Germany has a history of Nazi-led terrible violence directed at Europe and internally that brought about the slaughter of millions and the devastation of a  whole continent.  They have sought to stamp down what they see as inciting words and deeds.  Given the Nazi era, it makes plenty of sense, and I think most of us know very little about German culture.  I've been there twice and have German friends and the more I know, the more I realize I don't know much at all.  They are not like us and I respect their right to make their own decisions about what is acceptable in terms of public expression.  Let's compare something that is closer: how they feel and act about gay issues.  Gay themes appear in books and movies and on TV with far greater freedom and less controversy than in the U.S., and gay citizens have more rights.

BTW, don't believe much about ratings that are touted.  Take a look at The Ratings Game http://www.fair.org/...  That's about Faux News and CNN, but it could equally apply to Whiner.

Huge disagree!

Howard Stern is licentious, not malicious.  He'll get two lesbians to make out while riding a vibrating machine, but he'd never disparage them for doing so.  He'll tell off-color jokes and make sweeping stereotypical generalizations about gay people, but he'll do that to straight people, Republican people, or people who put sweaters on dogs.

...as far as I can tell, he is running a comedy show.

Unlike Don I'm-an-ass-in-the-morning, who apparently believes that he has pretentions of grandeur.  Although, on the other hand, those pretentions may be comedic as well.

They're both selling eyes and ears to their customers.  Their customers are--obviously--the advertisers, not the listeners and viewers.  Nothing more.  Nothing less.

I'm the one that gave Pam the tip about this freak and make no mistake about it his fraudulent history is as checkered as David Whoreowitz.

But as David Brock has pointed out these people are not the real problem.  They are paid whores (not sex workers whom I respect)for what Hillary way back in the last century called "The Vast Right Wing Conspiracy"

These media whores are like a hydra with many, many heads cutting off one does little good.  I think we need to go after the source.

But I also think we need to demand the end to the propagandizing of us by the Nazi/Dominionist/Christian Reconstructionalist propagandists.

Those of us who were part of the movements of the 1960s and 70s caught a glimpse of what a society based on equality rather than greed might look like.

It isn't transsexuals and transgenders or lesbians or gays that scare these people although we shake the closet doors of many.  what scares them is that women might no longer wish to be slaves trivialized into sex objects and bearers of children and men might decide that being Rambo sucks.  That murdering for the profits of the rich sucks.

The war they are fighting and waging aginst us is a cultural one against every thing many of us stand for:  An Ecologically sound, non heirarchical and no dictated gender roles sort of society where people actually work on their racism issuse rather than celebrating them and where LGBYT folk enjoy equality with straights.

Oh also with out imperialist wars and the war on drugs which has turned this into a prison nation.

Savage, Limpdick, Coulter, Malkin et. al. are just mercenary attack dogs for those who want to crush us under the heel of their fascist jack boots

That's why liberal radio is hard

Savage has 8,000,000?  Damn, am I jealous.  I've been shown the breakdown of how profit works in talk radio, and 8,000,000 listeners translates to a six-figure income for Savage.

Talk radio is about shock and controversy.  My producer keeps railing on me: "Don't ask, 'what do you think?'  This ain't about nuance, it's about black and white.  You don't say, 'the problem of stray dogs has lots of complex issues,' you need to say 'All stray puppies should be fed into wood chippers.'  That way, people can agree or disagree and they'll keep listening and they'll call you and you'll get ratings."

So the conservative mindset fits in perfectly with talk radio.  Black and white.  Plus the naturally occuring controversy that occurs when right-wingers speak their unvarnished opinions.

That's why your top three, Limbaugh, Hannity, & Savage, are all conservatives from hell, and the top liberal talker, Ed Schultz, is about as conservative you can be and still get a "progressive" tag.

But we're making strides on the left side of the dial.  Randi Rhodes is beating up on Limbaugh everywhere they are on the dial simultaneously, for example.

And soon enough, "Radical" Russ will be kicking Hannity & Savage's ass in the Arbitrons, because, while I am progressive and liberal, I'm not against calling people names and trashing their worldview in order to generate a dust-up.
